Red Bat Press is a small art press located in Portland, Oregon featuring the art and design work of artist Carye Bye. The press was officially introduced in September 2002. The focus is hand-set letterpress type with hand-colored woodcut illustration. So far it is a one-woman operation from design, to hand carving blocks, to printing and selling. The press creates art postcards, calendar cards, valentines, and note cards all printed on a table-top letterpress. Occasional custom jobs are also produced upon request - anything from business cards, to wine labels, to custom postcards or cards. Bye also volunteers and teaches at the Independent Publishing Resource Center in hopes to bring the delight of Old-time Printing to other printers-to be.

We are getting ready to make our first letters in wood for the letterpress. Meanwhile we have been accumulating some lead type for use with our small tabletop letterpress. For the last two years we have been exploring intaglio printing from hand engraving. I went to school to learn hand engraving many years ago and have practiced it ever since, but it was only at my husband's suggestion that we got a hand-cranked intaglio press and started to print from our hand engraved plates. No one else in New Orleans is doing this quality of copper plate hand-engraved lettering that can be printed, because it takes so long to learn the tools, and the medium shows every little mistake, so it is necessary to be a fluent lettering artist as well.
